Classical Guitar vs Acoustic Guitar: What Are The Differences

Though both guitars visually look similar with a construction including six-strings tuned EADGBE, a soundhole, and tuning pegs, there are actually quite a few differences between a classical guitar vs an acoustic guitar. In this article, we discuss the main differences between the two types of guitars.

Headstock

The headstock of the classic guitar is punctured into two grooves, there are plastic horizontal bars in the groove, and the strings will be wrapped around the bars. On the contrary, the acoustic guitar has a solid headstock, the strings are wrapped in vertical bars on the guitar buckle.

Tuning pegs

The mechanics of the tuning peg on a classical guitar are extremely different from those on an acoustic guitar. On a classical guitar, the tuning peg is normally made of plastic and metal, while on an acoustic guitar the whole tuning peg is made out of metal.

Neck

Typically, a classical guitar has a wider neck than an acoustic guitar. Classical guitars often will not have the fret markers (dots or inlays) along the fingerboard either.

Body shape

Acoustic guitars predominantly come in a dreadnought shape which is considerably larger than that of a classical guitar. The sides are usually thicker, the back is rounded, and the “waist” of the guitar is usually wider. Most classical guitars are full-bodied instruments, while many acoustics have cutaways that make access to the upper frets much easier.

Bridge

On a classical guitar, the strings are tied in a knot around the bridge to secure them in place. In contrast, acoustic guitar strings have little balls on the end of the strings, which are held in place with bridge pins.

Strings

The ultimate difference between an acoustic and a classical guitar is the strings. The classical guitar uses nylon strings whereas the acoustic uses steel strings. This makes a major difference in sound and feel.

The nylon strings of a classical guitar create a lot thicker and mellower or softer sound than those of a steel string. The steel strings on an acoustic guitar produce a bright, crisp, even twangy sound that resonates more than a classical guitar.
